Only a few months ago, and a couple thousands miles back, I redid all four brakes on my 2001 xj-8 -- rotors, pads, etc. Now a short, high pitched squeek has developed i think from the front, and only in the last seconds as the car rolls to a stop comes to arest.

Any ideas what is causing the squeek? it is not a grinding noise, and you only hear at near the end of the braking process.

thanks.

Thanks George and Garfield. All good thoughts. I will check them out. Sway bars were replaced this summer
Suspension may explain why you dont always hear it. As I say it comes at the very, very end of the stop whatever that may mean.
Thanks again.

Leonard,
Are you sure it is a "squeek", or is it a "squeal"?

If it is a "definite squeek" it may be in the suspension and not the brakes. When coming to a stop. the car will always squat, even slightly, nose low. You might try pushing the front of the car down slightly and releasing it to see if you hear the "squeek".

Don't know which pads you used, but most have a wear indicator which will cause a "squeal" when you apply the brakes. Just because you have driven the car only 1k since you did the job, doesn't mean a pad hasn't worn out. A caliper puck may not be fully releasing.

All kind of things in the suspension can cause a "squeek" ---- sway bar bushings, or what ever.

Just my thoughts..

Do not know Chuck--doubtful that the install would be the problem at that stage--bad pads sound more like it!

George, Are you, by chance, Chuck's brother? I worked for Chuck many years ago in Detroit. I will check on the brand of the pads. Would a noise develop a thousand miles after installation be due to pads?

My XJ is a 2001, if it matters.

Thanks.
