What are the inside radiator louvers for on the passenger side of my 93 XJS? My engine is running a little hotter than I like and the auxilliary fan is working. Would the engine run cooler if I removed those louvers?

Radiators clean on the outside Doug and looks almost new. Did the spin test and fan moved one blade and stopped. I will try newspaper test tomorrow.

Thanks,

"The only thing I haven't done is change the fan clutch and/or pull the
radiator and have it boiled out"

Well, whaddya waitin' for ??? :-)

Often the radiators on these cars are *externally* clogged with leaves and debris but as long as you have the rad out to clean it externally you might as well have it boiled out on GPs.

Does the fan clutch pass the spin test ?

Cheers

Just this afternoon I ran the XJS in the driveway with the ac on and the temp gauge went to 3/4 after about 45 minutes and the aux fan came on. I also had a meat themometer in the overflow tank and the temperature read 180 degrees when fan came on.

To continue:

My 93 XJS 4.0L is running hot. I have replaced the thermo switch for aux fan and it goes on
and off. I runs for about 1 minute after shutting engine off with ac on. I
put new antifreeze in.

It will idle all day in the driveway but when I drive it, especially with
the ac on, it tends to register almost 85% into the white zone on the temp
gauge. Today when I test drove it this happened and when I stopped for ice
cream and got back in and drove away with ac on needle when to end of white
scale but didn't overheat.

The only thing I haven't done is change the fan clutch and/or pull the
radiator and have it boiled out. I would expect the car to overheat in the
driveway if the radiator was bad.

The temperature gauge sits about 3/4 of the way up. I have put in a new thermostat and fixed the auxilliary fan, and also replaced the temperature sensor in the radiator. The louvers are old and stiff and I wonder if they are still working as designed. Why not let the electric fan push air throught the radiator and take the louvers off?

Allen --running hotter than you like or the engine likes--are you simply looking at the instrument or are you taking an accurate reading from the engine? The louvers and rubber flaps allow air through at speed but shut at slow/ stop to allow the fan to do a max pull!
