In the process of rewiring the car and in the speedometer there is a green light. Have several books but none of them mention what the green light is for. Does anyone know what it is for?

The chassis no. is S835640 it is a XK150 1959 Fixed Head Coupe I purchased this car from a college student back in about 1975 I was 19 years old at the time. I am 54 now and determined to get it done! My husband has done alot of work to it over the years and I posted to this web back in the early 2000 or so about the clutch being slow to engage. And with your guys help it turned out to be the flex line that had collapsed. I am impressed with all you guys! Nancy

Nancy a Z46776 is Jaguar part number C.12728 and is for a 3.54:1 final drive for the MPH market. Your car is a 150 Standard and the instrument is a "Mark I that should have 3 warning lights.(ref. J.27 sub booklet "Speedometer Code Numbers "Z" prefix" published April 1959. Further your car should be a FHC or DHC per J.29/1 "Jaguar Spare parts catalog for XK150'---is it? The J 29/1 lists part number 987 (a 2.2 watt bulb) for the high beam warning lamp and the Ignition warning lamp--note only 2 bulbs. Often those instruments had additional plug holes for warning lamps but in most cases I have seen the hole was not machined open--is yours open? If your car has the 2 arrows in the tach for indicators then the green "lamp" hole is redundant to your needs according to the technical material. There were some changes in warning lamps when the electrical tach came to be standard which was in the period of your car--would you mind sharing the chassis no. to be sure?

The number on the speedometer is Z46776 1180 if that helps George! On another note the turn signals are on the tachometer. And Otto the green light is @ the 3 o'clock position and the red is @ the 9 o'clock position and at the 6 o'clock position is what appears to be for high beam but there is no bulb or it is missing. Thank you all, Nancy

I don't disagree with your statement but in regards to the indicators on the speedo face it was either one or the other for the turn indicator lights. The different numbs. on the face are mainly to indicate gear ratios & trans. types. I have the very early speedo. & the turn indicator in the center of the dash but I also obtained a later unit, ( -60's ) in case I switch to the column type turn indicator. Then I would have to match the num. of the speedo. with the correct drive on the trans. in order to get the correct reading. I would also need another tach. that has the arrows.
The the replacement wire set I have has the later option, so some modification will be needed.

Otto there were no less than 44 versions for the XK150. This data is from Jaguar factory manual J27."Data for ordering Speedometers". Evidently it was confusing enough that Jaguar issued a manual just for that purpose--so back to what number is on the face!

Hi Nancy,
There are 2 speedom. used in the 150. If the turn signal is in the center of the dash under the crash roll, the speedom. will have a green light @ the 3 o'clock position, for the turn indicator, a red light @ the 9 o'clock pos. for the "ignition on" & a small blue light @ the 6 o'clock pos. for the high beam.
If the turn switch is on the steering column, then all you have is a red light for the "ignition on" @ the 9 o'clock position & the high beam indicator light @ the 6 o'clock pos.
Your turn indicators will be on the tach. face, a green arrow @ the 3 & 9 o'clock pos.
Regardless of the speedo. num.
Regards, Otto M.

Nancy 150s had a couple of different schemes--if you would give the number off the face of the speedo the question will be easier and a lot more accurate to answer.

Different countries had different regulation. Germany insisted that the high beam warning light should be green!

If it is green, it will be for turn signals, if it is blue it will be for high beam.
Smiths may have marked it with 2 small arrows if it was green.
Thanks Nancy--why not join us as a member of JCNA! Having said that if I read my figures right you have a small tail lamp car with shared functions on one bulb. Good to know it is a FHC (amazing what a speedo number tells you!) I am sure now that is simply an unused port.
