If the alternator faces the engine, it should have a counterclockwise fan.

Mopar...Motorola, at least I got the Mo right. But I assure you, I did not complain about the cooling or electrical discharge and, recall or not, the dealer made the change. At the time I didn't have the foggiest idea what they were talking about...45 vs 60 amps.

John your memory is good but a bit off. The recall was to install a motorola alt and voltage regulator. It was not a recall but rather a "fix" if certain customers had a complaint about battery discharge due to the type of driving they were doing. Folks who drove the cars on highways had no issues--just folks in hot climates that did a lot of city driving at night with the AC on.

I bought my Series II in January 1969 at the factory in Coventry. Back in the US in April, Jaguar issued a recall on air conditioned models, so I took it to the local dealer in Orlando. They installed a 60 amp Mopar by the simple expedient of grinding off one of the lugs. (not quite enough, as it produced a little bump in the bonnet later on). A Mopar voltage regulator completed the installation. Try telling that to a judge...

Jim thanks--fat fingers---------Don sorry I confused that. When I read it I thought perhaps you had tested the alt. and gotten a 50 amp reading. Jim thanks for calling it a "slight" typo.

I think Don was referring to a slight typo when he questioned if the 60 amp was really 50. See this sentence from your earlier reply;

" The easiest way to determine which alt you have is the yellow triangle tag on the rear of the alt. If the tag says NEG Earth it is the 45 amp but if it says 60 AMP--well it is a 50 amp!"

Don instead of trying to discuss the fan via //// or \\ try matching your fan to the illustration of a proper AC "reverse" fan in the JCNA Airconditioning judging guide --page 23. It clearly shows the slant of the blades. As far as your question the Alt was rated at 60 amps. The specific output of your alt may not be 60 but that is the rating. As you can tell from the way the tag is mounted it would be easy to swap. One other way to tell the models is the main mounting lug. If it is a large single cast lug it is the 45 amp if it has two lugs it is the 60 amp.

George, Thanks for getting back so fast. My alternator has the 60A NEG EARTH yellow tag on the back. I am almost sure it came off of a A/C equipped E-Type but the fan does not have any yellow marking. Any other way to determine which fan I have. If you look at the blades from the blade side and holding it on end the top blade slants this way "/" bottom to left top to right. And to clarify, even though it says on the yellow tag 60A it is actually 50 amp?

Don it depends but the answer is there were two different ratings-45 amp and 60 amp. The early cars 68 and 69 could have had a 45 but it was changed to the higher rating. As far as the cooling fan it is a reverse operation and should have a yellow AC ink stamped on the flat part of the fan. The easiest way to determine which alt you have is the yellow triangle tag on the rear of the alt. If the tag says NEG Earth it is the 45 amp but if it says 60 AMP--well it is a 50 amp! Good luck.
