Hi everyone...again.
I seem to be having a run of bad luck with my 1996 xj6. This time the transmission light came on and continues to stay on.
A neighbor has a computer unit and checked the car. It showed a Code 702 but he couldn't tell me anything more. I'm guessing it means that the transmission light is on :)
Does anyone know if it may just be a fulty sensor and where I would locate it or should I just go refinance my house?

It is 118 here in Phoenix so my sarcasm is on "high" today but thanks for any help you may offer.

Edward.

The TCM is located above the passengers footwell, below the RH blower motor. There is a relay on the internal circuitboard. The code you mentioned concerns that relay. It's rather small, but some folks have had some success cleaning up it's contacts.

Good luck!

Hi, Steven.
Thank you for your help. When you say a failed relay, is that relay inside the transmission or something accessed as part of the wiring system throughout the car? I don't know where the TCM is located. If it is inside of the transmission is it able to be addressed without a complete rebuild of the tranny?

Thanks again

Edward

Be careful of your model years Jay. Edward does not have the V8 supercharged that you have. He has a 1996 model, having a 6 cylinder non-supercharged with a ZF 4HP26 transmission.

Edward, I assume when you say "Code 702", that the code was actually P0702. That code suggests a relay failure within the Transmission Control Module. Which would mean TCM replacement, or finding a company that could possibly rework it.

Good luck!

I assume you know your car has a Mercedes tranny. You might consider shopping junkyards for low mileage Benz's for another transmission if your problem persists.

Hi Edward,
I get constant warning lights on my 1999 XJR. When I turn the car off they mostly go away. If I drive it hard they come back on. My tranny was replaced with a 60,000 mile unit before I bought it. The car has 112,000 miles and runs great. The warnings are annoying, but I'm beginning to believe they are eroneous. Hope yours are too. Do your warning lights stop after you restart your Jag?
