Ralph; The kickdown is a secondary trim device, it simply alters the pressure within the transmission. The shift lever actually selects the gears and then according to load, speed etc, the hydraulic pressure is constantly changed to help the gears change up or down easier, therefore, depending upon what is wrong with the kickdown, the gears can react as I described previously.

thanks to all...on with the mechanical and hope its back on the road soon. Peter..thnaks for the info re conversion..i would be interested in a list of parts...i thought it was somewhat invovled even if it is the cheaper/easier for conversion what with all the accessory items..pedals..linkages..trans housing chnage..etc. so please let me know what you know.. also it is my understanding the reomval/replacement of the transmission is somewhat involved..at least more so than my mga or triumph tr3...simply lift out through the interior.

Before rebuilding the car, make sure it is a cable problem, there are two cables and Welsh cited the later one fitted from engine 51452, look and see if the cable moves when you depress the acc pedal, you can then disconnect it and pull up on the inner cable to see what pressure it has and if it returns by itsself . Usually, a broken cable will give you slow upchanges but to all gears. if the cable were jammed or stuck in the fully out position it would make upchanges difficult. It could just be a badly adjusted cable!

before rebuilding the car check that the cable works ie, it pulls out and springs back into the housing. usually a broken cable will give you very long chang3es but to all gars ,a jammed cable will do the opposite and could prevent an upchange. The number welsh gave you was from engine no 514502 on.

You'd probably get more response on the E-type forum, but since you ask...

With 20:20 hindsight you at least have a car that is the easiest and cheapest of all E-types to convert to manual , as I will probably do to my 68 2+2 shortly. You could have my old parts if it weren't for shipping hassle and the fact I haven't started yet.

If you can find an XJ Series 1-2 gearbox it's a straight swap, with only a clutch pedal needed, plus stock flywheel, clutch etc. There aren't many manual XJs in the USA, I realise, but in the UK the whole list of parts would come to about $1500 and it wakes the car up to a whole new level of performance and drivability. Unfortunately, the postage might be as much again.. :- (

In the unlikely event that your cousin runs a shipping company, contact me off-list for the stuff you'd need
