How difficult is a fix for gas fumes? Current owner says it only happens when the gas tanks are filled to capacity. If held to about a 1/2 tank...fumes are not an issue. He says he has never seen a gas leak...just odor at times.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott JCNA offers an Hess and Eisenhardt service manual in the shoppe. We include all service bulletins including the 33 page bulletin issued to cover this issue. Your Hess is NOT like the other cars mentioned and without the bulletins you will just be guessing. I have a Hess and trust me they are unique in that area.

Hi Scott,

Gas leaks such as the one you describe are not uncommon in older Jaguars. I had a similar problem in one of the XJ6 sedans I owned.

If your car is similar to my old XK6, you probably can fix it yourself:

1. Fill the tanks with gas
2. Determine which tank the smell is coming from.
3. Remove the trunk side panel to expose the gas tank
4. Inspect for leaks, etc
5. Remove & replace the the gas filler hose
6. Tight clamps, connections, etc.
