im trying to replace a left low beam bulb on a 1998 XJ8 and am having a really difficult time getting it out.
are there any tips to remove this...i have been wrestling with it for 2 hours now

No trick, really.........Just stout fingers. There is are spring tabs on the electrical connector at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Sometimes they are rather stiff. Bulb will come out with the connector, switch bulb. Just remember not to touch the bulb itself with your fingers.
