the top on my 1989 xjs closes very slowly. and stops completely sometimes. i release and push the button again and move slowly again. just started doing this recently - though the car sits unused for months at a time. any ideas? could it need some fluid?

A few years back when Jaguar discontinued the hydraulic oil, I went on a mission to find equivalents. Below is a link to a document with my results. Regional airports are the first place to start looking.

Either low on fluid or the pump is weak. If you are low on fluid you need to find the leaks--most likely if you have a leak it is the rams from disuse. I would fill up the pump and exercise the system a few times. By the way are you running the car when you do this? If so is your battery fully charged?
