To George Camp, et al,
Can you please clarify when three extra studs were fitted to the front of XK120 cam covers? I have found 2 conflicting sources:
Source 1 From: Jaguar XK120 Third Edition, JCNA 42nd Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, B.C. (March 22, 2000), page 24 says "OTS 8/18/52, LHD 672689, from engine #W5653, changes were made to the cylinder head to enable modified cam covers to be bolted down at the front end of the covers".
Source 2 From: Jaguar XK120 in Detail by Anders, page 105 says "Apr 1952: three extra studs fitted at the front of each cam cover to prevent oil seepage, from engine number W4691..."
My car under restoration (chassis #672233, engine #W5003-8), has 3 studs at the front of the cam cover. However, my car was also upgraded sometime during its life from a standard to an SE - It has all the changes described in S.B. 95.
Are 3 studs correct for chassis #672233?
Thanks in advance, Bob

1952 XK120 Cylinder Head Cam Cover Change
George,
Heritage certificate shows my car to have all matching numbers. Engine # W 5003-8 is correct for my car, and has 3 extra studs in front of cam.
I didn't fully understand your answer. I got confused on the "stud requirements" explanation. If I count all the cam cover studs on my cam covers I get "11" per side. I purchased an XK120 Spare Parts catalog from JCNA shoppe and I do see where my engine number uses 2 C2627 cam covers but I'm fuzzy on the total stud count per unit. In a nutshell, do the C2627 cam covers have 3 extra studs in front? I could not come up with the answer from reading the service manual or from your explanation.
Thanks

1952 XK120 Cylinder Head Cam Cover Change
Robert from J8 (official parts catalog) edition 5 printed in 1958 the change was at W5653 but engines priod had a lot of annotated changes reflecting changes prior to the additional cams--Your engine W5003has the third type of covers or part numbers C6722 for RH and C6723 for the LH. The changes are by engine not chassis so is W5003 the correct engine for your car? If so the answer is possibly found in the "Stud" requirements. Engines # W4691 to W5653 required studs not called for on the earlier types. W5653 and sub. used 6 C6737/1 studs but in the prior group (W4691-W5652/3 used 4 C26267 and 2 C2627still a total of 6 extra studs. Robert if you are going to do the job I think you want to you really need a parts manual--they are available in the shoppe. Best--George
Well call the tech line Monday ok?
