I was able to scan Jaguar Service Bulletin A.13 that concerns exterior rear view mirrors and If you want a copy send a message to bobanddarlatcomcast.net.

The tech bulletin that George referred to is A.13 and it mentions that the cars were sent without the mirrors installed to avoid damage. It also mentions that owners may want to install them in various places but because of the projection of the "springback" mechanism they recommend mounting it on the bonnet wing. The magic spot is 7" forward of the rear of the wing and 1" outboard of the gap between the wing&center section. Part #C.19909 requires a 5/8" diameter hole.

Jaguar listed a mirror as an option of the E-Type, Part # C.16114 & C.19909. I understand that because of the chance of damage in transit the cars were not shipped with the mirrors installed. The S1 E-Type Judging Guide lists the above part number plus that period after market mirrors have been traditionally accepted.
