My fuel gauge has stopped working. How difficult is the repair?
Thanks,
Scott

1990 Jaguar XJS Convertible Gas Gauge Issue
Steven,
Does the gas have to be removed to check the sensor?

William is right, if the fuel level is kept low, the spare tire can be removed and the sensor removed from the tank and checked. Not very hard to do. While it's out, you can test the sweep and even make sure it can register full properly. If the resistance there seems consistent, that will tell you the trouble is elsewhere in the car, the instrument connections possibly.
Good luck!

I wouldn't fill it up, it is likely you'll have to remove the sender unit and to do so the fuel level has to be below the sender unit. It could just be a bad float, you will need to remove the unit to see.

The gauge had been reading about 1/4 tank low, so I put in 7-8 gallons of fuel and still the gauge looks "dead" like it has lost power whether the key is on or off. The only change was the removal of a 1990's cell phone mounted in the car at the right of the center console and a small microphone at the left side of the dash. If I fill the tank to full perhaps it will kick in once again, but it should be showing about a 1/4 tank. All other gauges work fine.
Thanks,
Scott

Give us a little more Scott. Stopped working how?? What does it do when you key on??
We know you've been busy on that car, what had been done on it around the time the fuel gauge issue popped up? Who knows, might be pertinent.
Cheers,
Not if the fuel level is low enough. If the level is below 1/4 tank or so, it is below the level of the sensor opening, and can be removed without any spillage of gas.
Cheers,
