I have an early 140 OTS with single relay for the overdrive S810507DN which was disassembled 35 years ago for restoration. It is now (after retirement) finally nearing completion. The only thing I can not determine is the factory location of the relay. On the xkdata site I have seen it to the left of the heater box on the scuttle - which would seem somewhat logical but there are no holes (scuttle has received a skim coat of body filler)that I can see from the underside. Any and all input would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

I have my father's 140 rd. that he bought from almost new. The eng. area is orig paint and the wire harness original too. There's no relay and no throttle switch. It's a very early number car, so a few might have gone out without relays. My other later 140's have 2 relays. My blue O.D. parts book says they should have 1 or 2, depending on the throttle switch.

Well low and behold I found the relay mounting holes to the left of the heater box. Problem solved! I believe XKs Unlimited also has "Jaguar XK140 Explored" by Bernard Viart. I'm probably going to need another copy by the time the car is finished -it will most likely fall apart due to use. Workshop manual the best for repair - this book the best for restoration.

I've enclosed a photo of O/D relays from Gary Grant's album of O/D relays fitted to his XK-140. Don't know year but he can fill in the details. The relay on the left side may be the kick-down switch for the O/D, not sure.
On my 150 the O/D relay is fitted to the left side inner wing panel, under a cover with the turn signal relay.

Well Steve you can't find it cuz I took it off and forgot! We ran out rather quickly but you can still purchase via Welsh (told they have stock!) . As to the relay/no relay/ 2 relays etc. Jaguar covered it pretty well in the service book. For FHC cars the throttle switch came in at 804523/815252 (this was with two relays) prior to that changes had been made at 804121/814216 which was a relay (single) only. I think there is one more bulletin on this but will have to look later. What is your vin please?

I am new to this forum but not new to Xks. presently I have a 1955 xk140 FHC, that has OD no relays but has a carb linkage switch, and dash switch. I think that OD control was all sort of a gray area and that jaguar did it " we will try it this on this car, and try something else on another one".
Also George & Bob you refer to the XK140 explored I looked briefly shoppe and did not see it, what is it stashed under?

I have XK140 Explored - absolutely invaluable!! The OD relay is shown - placement is not. In the scuttle "hole" diagrams the holes for the relay are not shown - bit of a "gray area". Thanks a million for your help.

Bob that is the correct location--you need to look a bit harder as there must be holes if the car had OD. While you are putting the car back together have you noticed the XK140 Explored available in the shoppe. Folks that have bought it rave about it. I have read and looked at it and it is a tour de force for a XK140 owner--esp if you are restoring one!
