Again, thank you. I passed on your info and they said they would check it out. They have had the car since about 9:30 this morning and have started it successfully numerous times without a failure to start!! Jim

I would advise him to look at the trans rotary switch for looseness and inspect the shift select cable for signs of stiffness or stretching, especially at the crimps to the cable housing.
Good luck!

How can a bypass the neutral safety switch in order to start my jag xjs
Thank you. This morning I tried to start the car and " lo and behold" after trying several times it started up!! I drove the jag to my normal mechanic who, although he doesn't really advertise as a jag mechanic, has done first rate work for me over the years. Anyway, I told him of the problem. After 20 or so minutes, he came over and said, Jim, the car has started every time we turn it on, you need to show me how not to start it. I was flabbergasted!!! Sure enough, it started for me several times in a row. I told him that I still thought the safety switch neede adjusting. He suggested that I leave the car with him and he'll continue, off and on to start it, and once it doesn't start he can check it out properly. I said OK. Make sense?? Jim

Your Neutral Safety switch is part of the transmission rotary switch, mounted on the left hand side of the transmission. That switch has probably failed. As George mentioned you should be able to start the car in neutral. If that doesn't work, the next best way is to jumper the starter relay mounted near the RH bonnet latch. Find the relay that has a rather large white wire with red bands and that's the one. MAKE SURE IT IS IN PARK before you turn on the ignition and then momentarily jumper the large wire above [white w/red bands] with the other large wire at the relay [it will probably be brown]. That should engage the starter to start the engine. Then you can make your way to your repair guy.
REPEAT, MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN PARK before trying this.
Good luck!
I have the same problem of my 1990 Jaguar Soverign jx6 not starting, and I thought it wAs the battery, but to make a
Ing story short...I found that now it only starts in neutral..
