Next month I am taking over ownership of our family's '64 E Coupe. Living in California I'm a little worried about security when I drive it. Anybody out there installed any kind of security system in their car? I'm thinking about some kind of system that would disable the ignition/electrical system via a remote. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

George you are correct. Just passing along a little info for something that might be easy and cheap to make things a little more difficult than just the stock ignition switch. I certainly do not think these precautions are fail safe. Just might make it a little less attractive target.

Alan you might be right. When it comes to me and electrical systems things have to remain pretty basic or I get lost real quick. Luckily so far with my car I have not had many of the grimlins some folks talk about with older Jags

Folks sorry but all of your ideas are for a car jacker or simple casual thief. If your E is the target of a ring it will simply be snatched and in a shop all of your precautions can be simply found or by passed. I suggest that finding the car is the way to go--use a Lojack or similar system for security. Of course you could do both!

David - I looked at the wiring diagrams and I think you're correct. In which case, how about pulling one of the coil wires from the fuse block, add an additional new wire to that coil wire female end and run it thru a switch and back to the fuse block using male/female connectors? (Again, assuming the fuse block connectors are the same as the SII). That way no cutting of existing wires is needed. Seems like there are many ways to skin this cat (pardon the pun)

I used to have a '66 E-type and it had a tach generator running off the back of one of the cams if I remember right. I think the tach set up changed with the "Rocker switch" type dash on the '68's and later.

There are probably better ways to do the same thing I did. I chose my method since I did not want to cut into any of the original wiring and I could remove it all back to original easily if I ever wanted to.

Charles - Additionally, if the SI is like my SII, the coil feed runs thru the Tachometer and it's easy to install an on/off switch in that wiring either before or after the Tach. An alternative is to to put a switch in the wiring to the fuel pump or to the starter motor

I put a Pertronix electronic Ignition system on my E-Type 10 or so years ago. At the same time I spliced in a long section of wire into the power (positive) wire for the system. I ran the wire along the frame rail and up thru the hole in the fire wall for the washer tube and into the cabin. I hooked it up to a hidden heavy duty on / off switch. When off it cranks and acts like a Jag that does not want to start. I also use a steering wheel lock bar to make things a little tougher to defeat two deterants.
