Hello all - I am new to this forum and hope you can help. I am actively looking for an original XK150S roadster and wonder how easy it is for the unscrupulous dealers to "fake" them by simply adding badges and three carbs to a standard 150.

I am aware of the "numbers matching the registration plate" criteria and duel fuel pumps vs one fuel pump - but are there other tell tail signs to determine authenticity - or weed out fraud?

I apologize in advance for such pessimism but the difference in pricing between a 150 and a 150S is significant enough for me to be sure of what I am buying! Thank you all for your help - I am looking forward to joining the club!

Jeff,
Body number may also be found on the dash panel, the metal panel that houses the gauges or the wood frame in front under the leather covering. Mine had it on both. A 150"S" in the shop also had it on the metal dash panel, 6420 is shown on this panel as on mine.

Body tags do not indicate the "S". Chassis do but the chassis number is normally stamped on the frame under the radiator. I am currently restoring 2 XK150"S" OTS cars. Jeff I suggest you call me on the tech line so we can discuss--do not want to put out comments about a vendor without all of the information. I will tell you that years ago I replaced the chassis of an "S" with an undamaged one. Fortunately it was also from an "S" but I reported that to Jaguar (as I do with any number switches). The reason I am telling you that is that parts could have been changed out of necessity and not for "dark" reasons. The gearbox number is on the top cover and you might be able to see it with a scope and go through the service door on top of the tranny tunnel.

Thank you George - you seem to be an expert here!

I have seen the body number for an XK150S on a rounded rectangular tag riveted to the firewall inside the engine compartment - Can you tell me if the body number is found in any other place on the car?
Is it easy to remake or copy those body number tags?

Also the chassis number is viewable stamped into a strut just below the engine - does it appear anywhere else on the chassis?

Top stamped Engine number matches lower engine number and registration plate - still looking for the transmission number!

I have found a nice 150S but I am suspicious of its provenance for reasons that may not be fair - but I'd like to be sure!

Also - I think this info would be useful to the group and I have not found it in a search of the archives

Thanks so much George

Jeff 150"S" cars are recorded as such on the Heritage Certificates which you can order here in the library. The cars also have unique engine prefixes and other than the first handfull unique veh. numbers.
