I am looking to have bumpers on a 68 DHC rechromed and would prefer to use a local plater. Does anyone have experience or a recommendation for the Boston or New England area? Any advice is welcome.

Ed and Cliff,

Thanks for the advice. Having looked around a bit. I agree that rechroming is the better choice. I think I can get to parity pricing with some more shopping. There are enough other things in this restoration that there is plenty of time to look further.

Bill,
It's been a few years but when I got my the 16 largest pieces rechromed in Indianapolis the price was half the cost of new (and w/o any refitting issues, of course). I'd be tempted to get other estimates.

Best wishes,
Cliff

Ed, Agree completely. I hope the Barratt products are a good match in shape and weight. Otherwise it will be a rechrome.

Bill ; One other thought, Contour fit is important original bumpers are thicker material
and fit better , than after market bumpers. Its better to have originals rechromed
is my experience. This applied to my Austin Healey and XKE.

Thanks for the info, Ed. I called New England Chrome Plating and got an initial estimate. I also found a place in Quincy, MA, South Shore Plating, and had them inspect the bumpers and quote. Both quotes were similar and were somewhat more expensive than new bumpers from SNG Barratt. I am going to drive to Barratt to pick up other parts and will check their bumper quality against my original units and make a decision. Thanks again for your lead.

Bill ; New England Chrome, Plating
63 Thomas Street
East Hartford Connecticut 06108 phone 860 5287176
Ask for Dean the owner.
I have used them for many years for my 1964 XKE Coupe Si original owner and also for a 1964 Austin Healey 3000.
Good luck
