Ok, it is time for the changing of the fluids. Anything new? New ideas? New fluids? Same old thing? I am checking to see if anyone has new thoughts on Brake and clutch fluid of XK's to XKEs. Don't tell me about silicone! Already tried that years ago with expensive results.
I still see Dot 3, Dot 4 and Dot 5. Did I miss anything else --maybe special racing fluid?
Any new suggestions or are we still on the old standby's?
Thanks for any suggestions. Just wanted to ask before I get ready for the beautiful Arizona winters. ABOUT TIME !

Brake and Clutch Fluid , Phoenix is under 100 Degrees-- Fluid change time.
I'm using silicone in my brand new restoration. Glad I did because I had a brand new fluid reservoir with a split in the bottom. When I filled it to bleed the brakes, it got everywhere... all over the new paint, in addition, there were a few leaks in a couple of the brake line joints that weren't tight enough. My fault, of course, but it still got brake fluid on a very expensive paint job. The silicone won't damage the paint like DOT3 or 4. I cannot tell a bit of difference in the feel or performance of either the clutch or brakes. Possibly because it was an entirely new brake and clutch system.
I debated for quite a while, reading as much as I could on the differences and decided to choose the silicone, I'm glad I did.

I used silicon about 10 years ago and the clutch would not respond as normal and I had to rebuild. Was not fun.
If dot 5.1 is non silicon that may be great but can I add it to the existing fluid or do I need to rebuild and bleed out system before I add the 5.1?

There is a new brake fluid out Dot 5.1. It has a lower viscosity for antilock brakes and also has a higher wet and dry boiling point. It is non silicone. I am changing my cars over to it. Major name brands make it and Amazon carries it.

Me Too Mike. I have used it in hundreds of vehicles over the last 33 years without any issues.

DOT 5 is Silicone. I am curious just what your "expensive results" were with silicone brake fluid.

Mike. what was the reason for the fault? I don't see how it could have been the fluid. more likely a bad seal or cylinder. Regadless of the fluid type (although I would recommend silicon) it makes sense to not mix different types. This is not difficult, just bleed out the system as normal until the new fluid comes out from all bleed nipples.
