After re-listing my Mk.V Drophead in the JCNA classifieds a few days ago, I've had a whole new barrage of scammers claiming to want to buy it. This seems fairly typical of the style:

Good day,
I want to purchase your item for what is the last price ?I will like to pay using PayPal,After payments has been made,I will arrange for the pick-up and will you let my pick-up agent to come to you house for the pick up? Because i don't want you to worry yourself about the shipment.You can send me some pic to my email address stevemorris456yahoo.com

Hmm. Another repetitive feature of these scammers is the use of western Christian names, and the emphasis they put on them, as in.

Hello,
How are you? My name is John.

... or the use of upper case, as if they are permanently shouting:

HELLO,
'M INTERESTED IN BUYING THE CAR WHICH U'VE PLACED ON NET FORSALE.

They all demand an urgent response. So I have made up a template, which I am sending to all such enquiries from now on:

Thank you for your e-mail. I have forwarded it to the FBI fraud division so they can trace you in your country of origin.

Hey Glenn, As they say, we still love you, ditto Miklos. The common enemy here are the scam artists, whoever they are. This is an issue for all of us, no matter what side of the political aisle you're on. It is a condition that seems to be increasing every day in every part of our lives and as Glynn first said, we Jaguar devotees seem to be a constant target. The best thing we can do as a club is to shine as much light on this activity as possible so as few members and Jaguar owners in general don't suffer losses dealing with these crooks. It seems it might be good to elevate this discussion to AGM consideration. It does tick off all of us!

Thank you, Howard, for your thoughtful, considerate and "right on" comment about the purpose of this forum. I'm sure some of us are liberals; some of us are conservatives; some dems, some repubs and some not attached to either. And, the joy of this site is that we all come together and celebrate the joy of the cars we enjoy TOGETHER. Let's continue to do this, and maybe, just perhaps, we'll realize we have more in common than in opposition. Thanks, Howard for reminding us of that.

As a British ex-pat and JCNA member, I feel I have to chip in on this. I have quite a list of clearly bogus e-mails from people responding to my various advertisements on JCNA classifieds, both as seller and buyer, including one who wanted to buy "my animal". These people are not in the UK. The addresses they give are straight off the 'Monopoly' games board. It's all fake. They've never even been to the UK.

I wrote to the JCNA legal representatives and webmaster earlier this year pointing out the level of bogus enquiries, along with the bizarre posting by 'Oriesiashag' (meagogmaniamhschool.info) on p.2 of the current classified advertisements - and which I'm amazed to see is still showing online. We're clearly being targeted, and while I'm sure that most of us are smart enough to know it's a scam, I feel that the JCNA ought to make an official notification to its members that this is happening. Unfortunately, cyber crime goes hand-in-hand with technology, and there are plenty of unscrupulous people out there who are just waiting for an opportunity. No doubt as Jaguar owners, we are perceived as 'the wealthy' who are ripe for picking - even though you can pick up a good used Jaguar for a fraction of the cost of a new Volkswagen. Such is the mindset of people who consider themselves victims of society, and who feel that gives them the right to steal from people who worked for it. And I'm not even a Republican!

Howard you are most likely on point! In all of my years I have not had an issue with anyone on that island. Scams and frauds we have a plenty of right here!

I would bet money that these scams are carried out, in the majority, by individuals who are not true Brits, but come from some other port of origin!

I agree, Two years ago I had a ad for a Jaquar belt buckle in the JCNA section. A Brit responded claiming he will send a check much more than the belt and and courier will
come to my house for the balance of the amount.
A total scam I spotted immediately, however he tried it again a year later.

For what it's worth, In 45 years of messing iwth car/bikes in the UK I have never heard of British people requesting moneygram or Western Union type transactions.
