What is the largest battery group size I can install in my Series I E-Type? I read somewhere that the standard was a Group 35? Which is L=9 1/16", W=6 7/8", H=8 7/8"

I think you would have difficulty fitting anything much larger than a Group 35. Here is a list of dimensions of common batteries. This list and a ruler should tell you what you can do:

Steve take your battery hold down and go match batteries at several places. If it fits your bracket and is the right height and terminal configuration --you are there!
For the 3.8l cars, my notes say that the battery was originally a G24L.
I have used a 26R in mine, but it is a bit short on the length. Height is okay.
