Can someone who knows PLEASE tell me which hose clamps are proper for a 1952 XK120 engine restoration?
I have been told to use TEX clamps for the upper radiator hose and to use Jubilee (round heads) for all other hoses. Is this correct??? I have also been told that Cheney hoses were not available until XK140's.
Does anyone know what the judges expect?

The Jaguar hose clamp question has been thoroughly researched, at least from the XK's onward. Thanks, in great part, to Roger Payne.
The earliest XK120's (and sedans of the same vintage) are known to have used TEX/Griptite clamps with a phase-in of Cheney's. At some point, (mid-1950's?) Cheney became the exclusive Jaguar hose clamp. It continued through the 1975 year-models.
When listing the clamps, the 120 Parts Book generally uses the word "Clip" or "Griptite" but, for some reason, it specifies "Cheney" for the clip on the Front Cover Breather Pipe. (The 120 Service Handbook also shows Cheney clamps in its illustration of the heater valve.) Wherever the term "Clip" is used, in reference to a 120 hose clamp, it may be assumed to mean either a TEX or a Cheney clamp.
(Brake fluid reservoir supply hose clips excepted.)
The 140 Parts Book, except for the "Cheyney" (sp) clip on the breather pipe, uses the term "clip" for all other hose clamps. It is believed that the 140 used only Cheney clamps.
Cheney clamps most commonly had a grainy silver cad or zinc colored plating but some early 120 models were seen with clamps that appeared to have a "blued" finish. (Stainless or chrome-looking clamps are considered non-authentic.)
The 150 Parts Book lists all hose clamps as "Clips" . They are also believed to be exclusively Cheney clamps.
The pertinent design/judged features of the Cheney clamps are:
- round head straight-slot adjusting screw
- a grooved (not perforated/slotted) adjusting strap, properly sized such that there is not more than one inch of extra strap showing
- proper finish
Cheney clamps were the result of a UK standard, #3628. Two other manufacturers, TERRY and Jubilee, produced clamps that look very similar, but not identical, to Cheney's; where identified, they may be judged as non-authentic.
Documented differences of opinion welcomed.
(I need to ask Rob Reilly about the MK V's.)
