Recently replaced mine with a new cork one which weeps enough gas to create persistant odor in the tire well. I sealed both sides but fuel seems to migrate thru the cork itself. Anyone know of a source for these in modern fuel-proof elastomer?

Thanks George, I did not know that. I guess the only issue then is obviously I need an empty tank before I take that off, right? actually as I type that it seems pretty obvious to me.!!

I will research removal of the sump. is there anything I should look out for before I tackle this?

Joseph and Bob. The usual issue is the copper washers on the retaining bolts. Properly installed the gaskets give no problems. For Bob--the pickup filter can be checked from the sump. No need to remove the unit at all!

I am curious too. I have a SII car with a really clean tank and known history. (it was my dads since almost new)
I was poking around under the fuel sender and the tank is awesome, no rust, no debris.. Or old toys from when i was a kid....surprisingly. But i digress..

I bought a cork gasket for the pickup cover. I want to open that up and check the pickup screen and that area.
I was aprehensive from the look of the old school cork gasket, and now i am going to hold off until i find a modern gasket
