1999 XJ8 Trans stoppes working in 1st and 2nd. P1722 comes up on the scanner. Is it time for a new Trans? Dennis

Depends on what you mean by "stops working". If when you put it in drive and accelerate, you get the engine RPM going up and a bang, then the Gearbox Fault on the instruments, an internal drum has broken and can most likely be fixed. That is by a competent gearbox guy with ZF experience. Trans still has to come out, so it won't be inexpensive. But it will probably be less than replacement or overhaul.
