If any one can help. My 1999 xj8 vdp wont start. when I hold down the key I get a single "click". Some times If I hold the key down in the start position longer than nessary it may start the car. Mostly not.

Check the battery terminals and starter motor connections before jumping into something more complicated to find the problem. Could also be a starter motor solenoid or relay.
