The front exhaust manifold on my 1970 SII has developed a nasty crack about 3 inches long on the No. 4 pipe at about 45 degrees to the circumference on the exposed face, just above the meeting point of the 3 pipes to the single downpipe manifold. Anyone have experience of weld repairs to an E manifold or am I better off trying to find a used replacement?
Also, is this a common problem and what would be a likely cause/remedy to avoid a repeat? I did have both manifolds coated by JetHot two years ago but have never heard of this being a potential for a failure. Thanks

Why put good money toward fixing a broken manifold? For the amount of money a welder will charge, you can easily find another set if you just bother to look....Jaguar Heaven?
And in the end, your exhaust manifold will still look broken.
My 2 cents.

It is not uncommon for cast iron to crack for one reason or another (abuse, extreme rapid hot-cold cycle, uneven expansion-contraction), especially if the casting is intricate as was the case on my Alfa Romeo Spider when it was still "new".

Years ago I brazed a broken flange on my E-type exhaust manifold, and it held up well. Any good welding shop can repair weld cast iron. I suspect that other than unsightly, it may be noisy until the manifold heats up enough to close the gap. However, you will have to send it back to Jet-Hot if you want to keep up appearances.

No 4 Pipe? Front Manifold? I presume you are using the No 1 is at the rear situation, that is only for timing purposes, the front is still the front. Anyway, did it crack due to excessive heat, check and make sure this is not the case.
