Hi guys,How do you tell the year of manufacture on the big square number plate? It say's gearbox number,body number,engine number etc.But I don't see any numbers that would indicate what year it is.
I have what I beleive is a very early (1951?) MK7.I got it without a title and running gear.It has slots for traficators,and bucket seats without the rear tables.What numbers on the plate will verify the year?

Marc,
First, if you are not already a member of JCNA, you should become one. The Heritage Certificate provides the production date as researched through the archives by Mike Cook.

And you don't "Buy A Copy" like buying a magazine, you Buy a Heritage Certificate that is unique to your car.

You should go to the JCNA Library and download the Heritage Certificate form. It will tell you more about it and what you need to provide. The cost for JCNA members is $35, and for non-members, it is $50. $15 difference. If you have more than one Jaguar you want a Heritage Certificate for, the cost of joining JCNA as a Member at Large for $30 will either let you break even or you will be ahead if you do 3 cars.

Hi again Steve, Question? What is in the heritage certificate other then the chassis numbers? Is there also,body,engine and trans etc? I would like to buy a copy if someone is willing to copy it and send to me.$50 for each question is a bit more then I want to get into since I have several car with lots of questions and not exactly one of the wealthier Jag guys. Marc,

MK VII Production Begins in December 1950 with 710001-rhd and 730001-lhd
and your car is 732969, that is 2969 after Dec 1950. The total production run ending September 1954 for the MK VII was 8184-lhd.

In January 1952, a 2-speed wiper motor, providing Park, Normal and High is fitted beginning with 711802-rhd and 732209-lhd.

You are 760 cars after that date.

In October 1952, Moulded rubber wiper blades replaced the earlier laminated type
714083-rhd and 733845, so you are 876 cars before that.

So between January and October, Jaguar produced 1636 cars in a 10 month time. 1636 divided by 10 gives an average of 164 cars a month. So if you are 760 cars after January, that is about 4 or 5 months after January or around April or May 1952.

All that said, now that you have your chassis number, you need to go to the JCNA web site, look in the library for Jaguar Heritage Certificate and get one. That way you will know the exact date of manufacturer.

Since you are asking about a MK VII, this probably belongs on the saloon forum. That said, what is your chassis number? It should be on the ID plate you are referring to.

I am sure someone is better equipped to tell you what year the car is but as far as I can see there is no way to tell the year of the car by the plate.
If you want to know the date it was produced I would go to https://www.jaguarheritage.org/Login.aspx and get a factory certificate if they have one on that car. May give you more info you would enjoy.
Otherwise you can take the chassis number and look on line for the list of chassis numbers and when the chassis was produced.
As far as what year it was released by the factory or year registered as, that will be a different history. Until a few years ago most cars built after July were considered the next year model. Example - a Mustang or Jaguar chassis built in Sept. 1992 was a 1993 model even though it was produced in 1992. Would love someone to correct me if I am wrong.
