My Mk. II's fuel filter assembly never had the replaceable fuel filter cartridge; I've just received a new one. Simple question: The hole in the cartridge goes on top, and the spring underneath, correct?

Rick the correct filter has a hole through the center. Fuel comes straight in the bowl then filters out. The filter with the spring will filter in the inside and drastically limit the surface area of the filter.

Interesting. This is what xks.com listed in their catalog. I'll post a photo this evening, just to be sure that what I'm referring to is perfectly clear.

Yes but that sounds like a V12 filter and works backward from the proper MK2 Filter which holds itself to the top. Fuel should flow straight through the hole in the filter to the bowl bottom then filter through the element to the carbs. Your 61 car had only a screen from the factory. Filters came in as a tech change at the end of 1967.
