My grandson got out of the passenger side door of my XJS. When he did the door handle on the inside stayed in an outward position and the lock mechanism was in the locked position. Before I could respond he closed the door and now its locked. The outside door handle is free, it does not respond to anything, the inside handle and lock are in the positions mentioned, and the key will turn to the locked position but not the unlocked position. I hope that someone has experienced this before and can help.

It's fixed. The problem was apparently the door lock. The same thing has happened again and was quickly fixed by playing with the lock only. It took two of us initially to get it open, one one the outside and one on the inside. I could not get any leverage when I was inside by myself. Thanks much to both of you for your ideas.

You might try flipping the driver's side door locking tab back and forth several times, if the power lock solenoids are actuating this might "loosen up" the passenger door lock. If the passenger side locking tab moves back and forth but the door doesn't unlock, the connecting rod may be broken. Then you will have to remove the seat and get the panel off.

Good luck.

Steve I don't understand your solution. How do I unlock and unlatch from inside of the car. As I have said it's all bound up on the inside of the door. Nothing works, unless you are referring to the inside of the door, which would require removing the seat in order to remove the door panel.
