Near completion of restoring my 1971 E-Type. The bonnet has been
completely disassembled, media blasted, triple coats of epoxy primer and
high build primer. Now, I am trying to align before having it painted and
not doing to good. The main air intake on the drivers side has not yet been installed and mud shields and other parts have not yet been glued into
position. I sure could use some tips on how to achieve proper alignment.

Dale; I recently completed the bonnet assemble. I reused everything and just had to repair some rust rear of the right wheel opening and pound out some dents in the chin piece. Prior to removing the flanges I made an index system to locate the flanges after media blasting. I bonded the flanges with Sikaflex 221 to bare metal not primed metal using the index system I made.
The wings and center section were painted after the flanges were bonded. I reassembled the bonnet, valences, diaphragms and chin piece. I found that everything did not match or fit as it should so I had to remove four of the flanges and rebond them in the proper place. None needed to be moved more than 1/4" but 1/4" is a lot when proper fit is needed.
In thinking about it one could assemble the bonnet with out the flanges bonded and then mark where the flanges needed to be then take everything apart and bond the flanges then paint then reassemble.
Once I repositioned the flanges the bonnet went together nicely and fit the car well. Whether this would work as well if you had to use new pieces I don't know.
I have some pictures posted on and you can find them on the 'Photo Album' section and search using my email address jhutchins3atyahoo.com>
Hope this helps and good luck.
