The pressed-on metal "skirt" (the black part forward of the hub carrier in attached image) on my right rear hub has come loose from the hub. Is there a way to reattach it without disassembling everything?
Thanks.

I just put one of these water throwers back on. Actually, I got a new one from one of the major suppliers, XK's, I believe, but I think all can supply a new water thrower, C.20813. Note, the earliest 3.8l E-types did not have the water throwers, being phased in around late 1962, early 1963.

The hub had been pulled out to replace bearings and a cracked hub carrier to start with, so this was a perfect time to replace the missing water thrower. This replacement cannot be done without separating the hub from the hub carrier as access from the rear ( smaller end) of the hub is required.

I first cleaned out the channel in the hub that the water thrower sits in, using a small file. The hole in the water thrower needs to be smaller than the channel on the hub it sits in so that it is an interference fit when all together, so don't file too much. You can see the channel in the photo I've included prior to the cleaning. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the hub with the water thrower on before reassembling the whole hub carrier again.

After cleaning the channel, I then heated the water thrower in the oven to about 400oF, and tried to fit it around the hub in the channel. No go, so I filed the hole in the water thrower a bit bigger, trying to keep it as uniformly circular as possible, then re-heated and tried again. I repeated this 4 more times until the water thrower did just sit in the channel when hot. As it cooled that last time, it shrunk and held on tight. Just to be certain, I took a center punch and added about 12-16 punch marks evenly around the edge of the channel on the hub side so that the hub metal bent over the water thrower a bit more to pinch it in tighter. It is in very tight now.

Cheers, Mark R.

I think these are water slingers. One of mine came off and I tried to put it on, no luck. I had a machine shop try and they could not get it to stay. Ended up tack welding it in four places. Joel.
