I have a 1995 Jaguar XJS v12 2+2 convertible (well, my wife does :-). The transmission is doing some weird stuff and the light is coming on.

I have a great transmission shop that I took it too. The problem is none of his tools can read the transmission codes from it.

I would like some information about where I could buy or rent a scanner that can read the codes. I have heard that this is OBDII compliant. The connector sure looks like OBDII.

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks!

I'll second Mr. Petry on this one, and not just for pre-1996.

There are a wide number of manufacturer specific codes that cannot be read by the majority of "over the counter" OBD-II readers. I have a 1999 XJ8L and an Innova 3130 code reader and while this reader is not "basic," it predates the ability to read ABS and SRS codes and could grab nothing with regard to my "Gearbox Fault" alert (which doesn't trigger the check engine light).

I happen to have an independent shop locally that could read, and clear, all the codes my reader cannot. It cost just under $100 for about 15 minutes time, but at least I knew what was, and was not, going on as far as stored codes go.

You will probably have to either see a dealer or an independent shop that has some good quality equipment. That model year has the engine management system that is technically OBDII compliant, but the mandate did not take effect until Jan. 1, 1996. The system was there, but not fully implemented.

I think the AutoEnginuity device will read those codes, but I'm not positive. Generic OBDII scantools won't help you here.

Good luck!
