Everything is disconnected and the engine is ready to come out. Can I trust one of the lifting brackets attached to the head bolts to support the engine and gear box? There are two of these brackets on this engine but if hook both I wouldn't have the angle to tilt the engine for removal.

Appreciate any comments

Wicker; Bruce is correct, it is far easier and much safer to remove the engine from below.
remove intake and exhaust manifolds and everything else that appears to be in the way. put a dolly under the engine pan or sump as the engine will sit nicely on any flat surface and attach your lift device to the two lift brackets on the head bolts. Remove the engine stabilizer, transmission support and engine mounts after you have put some tension on the lift apparatus. Make sure all attachments are removed, cables, wires, etc. Once everything is a go then you can lower the engine to the dolly then lift the front of the car by the picture frame to get it high enough to pull the engine out from the front. The torsion bars and reaction plate have to be removed also.
Don't get under any the car unless jack stands support it well, be safe and have fun. Joel.

Chapter 13 of the Haynes E-type workshop manual looks like it spells out the method Bruce speaks of. I have not looked at either method too hard but so far I think going out the bottom might be a little easier.

I pulled my engine from the top and was not happy having so much weight hanging in the way of all that space frame and other stuff. I read that it is easier to to take out the bottom. I put it back in from the bottom and found that it was incredibly easy.
I am sure someone can tell you better than I can but here goes. Jack up the front end a few inches. Place a support under the engine and transmission (being sure everything is disconnected at least twice) Move your hoist over to a cling that you attach to the space frame. Take the weight of the car. Remove the engine mounts, the rear engine stablizer mount and the transmission mount. The just raise the entire front of the car high enough to clear the engine and transmission. Pull that bad boy out from under the car and you are home free.
Good luck

Bruce
