with the car on a lift this rod was sticking out.. Any ideas?

Also, should you decided to remove the bonnet, be certain that you have at least three close, and strong, friends on standby for the operation. The bonnet is HEAVY!

As you can see by the photo, Tom attached a good strong rope from the rear bonnet latch on the firewell up to the safety link (or any other secure points) before he disconnected the bonnet link. It is essential you do this if you are going to open the bonnet like he has. The danger is that the whole bonnet can flip forward causing serious damage. Also it is best to have 4 hands to do it.

To obtain maximum access to the front of the engine compartment , as shown in this picture, it's sometimes desireable to disconnect the bonnet hinge and tilt the bonnet further upward. Before doing that, first always disconnect the clevis joint at the other end of this rod or it will be either bent or broken.

If that is the front of your car it is probably the rod that controls the retractable license plate holder.

That's known as the "towel rod" which is attached to the front license plate bracket of a S2 car. Once attached the license plate will swivel so it doesn't get damaged when the bonnet is raised.
