According to the Jaguar manual, I'm supposed to use the power outlets in the glove compartment or rear console in lieu of the cigarette lighter when I need to charge auxiliary devices. I wouldn't mind that *if* the power outlets were more conveniently located, but getting to either of them is a pain in the tuckus, especially when one has mobility issues.

What is the *reason* Jaguar doesn't want one to use the cigarette lighter in the car to charge things? If there truly is a good reason, I won't tempt fate and do it anyway, but if there isn't any real harm in it, the lighter would be waaaay more convenient for me.

Thanks for explanations!

Many thanks for your replies, Steven and Garfield! I'm a non-smoker, so I certainly don't need the lighter in that sense, and it will make my O2 concentrator a LOT easier to charge up when I'm out and about. And no, I wouldn't leave it plugged in when the car's not running - I just like to reserve the concentrator's batteries for when I'm *not* in the car. :-)

Steve's the man when it comes to these thing's, he for sure knows Jaguar's.

The only thing I can think of in addition to his comments, is just remember that when you turn off the key, off also goes the power--at least it does in my Jag. So if you are wanting to leave a device plugged up hoping that over night it will fully charge, your most likely out of luck. I never gave it a thought, because my Caddy's plug was hot all the time-----I guess so old men could light up their stoggies any time, so I just assumed it was the same in the Jag. What's that saying about [assumption].

The only 'reason' is that they added these power points so the normal lighters could be left alone for normal operation. These are all similarly ignition powered, and can be used interchangeably. If you have no need for the lighter, by all means, use it for your devices without any fear.
