I am trying to locate the 1972 XKE Roadster Ascot Fawn with black leather that my granfather purchased in Buffalo NY in 1972. It would have been registered under that name of John W. Johnson, Ward Road, Orchard Park, NY. I do not have the serial number, so I am looking for some help as to how I can locate it. My grandparents have passed away this past year and I would like to see if the car is still around and perhaps for sale. Thank you for your kindness if you have any suggestions how I may find the whereabouts of the car today

Sincerely,

Mark Weppner

Mark,

Any luck getting the info you were seeking? Years ago I was able to search for prior owners of my 1959 Corvette through the Motor Vehicle division in Ohio. They were able to send me a fax with all prior owners by using my serial number. Granted you're looking for info based on just a name, but I would think the DMV in NY may have a way of searching their database by name, provided they go back that far. In my prior searches, I discovered some states only hold 10 years worth of data.

As a longshot, if the car was originally ordered through Jaguar by your grandfather, the info may be available through Jaguar Cars in NJ via the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust department. They can do a production trace to help you. Only caveat is they usually need proof of ownership. They may be able to help you at least find the serial number. I think there's a link here on this website to contact the department. If not contact me off list and I'd be happy to get you the info. We got a certificate from them back in 1997 and it's quite informative.

Coincidentaly, we own a 1972 Ascot Fawn Series III, but it's a 2+2.

Mark,

It would help if you were able to get the VIN/Serial number for the car. Perhaps in some of your grandfather's old records somewhere. There are several registries of cars, but they mostly list sequentially by serial number. Over the years, the car may have been painted, changed hands another time or two or three, so no one remembers who the original owner was. You can't "CARFAX" cars this old, so the only real hope is trying to run down the serial number through one of the lists or JDHT.

Good luck.
