Our 1996 XJ-6 windshield wipers work very erratically. Most of the time they will not work unless the steering column is pushed all the way in and in its lowest position. Then, when they do work, they mostly only go very fast, Sometimes I've been lucky to get them to do intermittent wiping. Once, they even got stuck in the fast mode regardless of steering wheel position and wouldn't quit until I turned the motor off. When I re-cranked it, they stopped.

Can anyone think of what might be causing this.

in a sense I wished I had your problem because mine is the opposite, sluggish wipers that can't keep up with the rain, and if I do a single wipe, the motor doesn't have the power to go back to park. This is ridiculous, a car of the caliber of Jaguar with such a lame wiper system. I replced the Bushes, lubed the wiper cams, nothing, it actually got worse.

I am NOT going to replace the motor with another Lucas motor. those things
are no good.

Does anyone know of an American replacement wiper motor that will make
the wipers chop my fingers off if I'm not careful ? I want more speed and power to move the 'monsoon' rainshowers we get here in the Southeast.

Can those motors be hot-rodded to produce more speed and torque ? I don't
care if the life of the motor is reduced, as long as I get REAL wiping
action.

Answer: sounds like the multi function switch on the column or wires to same.
