Hello Richard,
although not a real breakdown specialist,my 83 only goes to shows and slalom races. Recently a friend of mine hed a SIMILAR SOUNDINDG PROBLEM . After much knashing of teeth and burning the midnight oil,and changing the crank sensor, he was advised to put on a new distributor cap, result, vroom vroom. I know we always suspect the worst, and sometimes it probably is, but sometimes we forget the simple things, basic tune up parts which on lesser cars are changed almost like your socks, put on a new cap and rotor, if it starts or not then put on a new set of wires, and instal new set of NGK V groove PLATINUM spark plugs .
I HAVE INSTALLED a MSD Ignition box on my car, the car starts more readilly now, also the later single IGNITION COIL, eliminating the need for the 2nd coil @ the front near the rad.
Good luck.

Since yours is an '86, it won't have a crank position sensor. The ECU is in the boot/trunk, upper right side, behind trim panel.

Since you have good spark and you hear the injectors clicking, I'm wondering if you have enough fuel pressure? Do you have a pressure gauge?

has great spark checked it today fuel filter is clear if i take the crank sensor down is there a way to check it second can u tell me where the ecu is located in the car? it almost sounds like the timing is out 180 degrees but i know for a fact the distibutor has never been out of the car

Make sure the spark you see is a good spark. I had two coils fail. They would put out a weak "orange" colored spark instead of a "white" spark. You said the fuel pump comes on, but are you getting fuel to the fuel rails. You might have a clogged fuel filter. Also check the crank position sensor.
