Hello, I have a 1996 XJ12. Iwas wondering if anyone knows the size of the speakers in the front doors? Also are there any performance upgrades?
Thnaks,
Dan

again, my 1984 has 5" on each door from the factory, but I don't know about the 1996. Measure them before buying new ones. Jaguar doesn't install cheap speakers like Ford does. Why replace them ? Are they bad ?
mine are 20 year old originals and they still sound great at maximum volume without distorting; My complaint is the dull sound at low volume,
maybe my hearing is compromised, after all, I was playing rock guitar in the '60s, 70's, and 80's exceeding all decibel levels with four Vox Super-Beatle amps (300 watts each) wired in parallel, and sixteen 12" speakers.
I still play but now with a 60-watt Ampeg Reverb-Rocket amp. with two 12"s. In my 40 years of live music looking for the best sound, I have learned that the best sound is produced by Class-A amplifiers, (such as those used in high-quality Home Stereo). Speakers may be important in reproducing the sound, but not as much as the amplifier producing it.

I am not worried about installing them I can do that, just look at my webpage. Thats what I do. I just wanted to make sure they were 5" before I bought a new sew set. As for bass that will be handeled by a dd 9112 12" sub and a tru tecnology amp.

I would call your nearest Jaguar dealer and ask who they use to install their premium stereo and speaker systems. Only go to that person. Most audio/stereo places won't work on Jaguars because their not educated enough on the vehicle and if they do attempt to work on your car they will jack it up. My XJ40 has 3.5" speakers on all four doors and 4" speakers below the back seat. My understanding is that Jag for many years did not standardize their speakers so their practically different from year to year. Base is going to be a huge problem. I recommend a tube install in the trunk. Just a 10" tube should be enough to give you a nice crisp sound without blowing your ears out.

I think they're always 5" on doors, at least they are in my S3 XJ. Crutchfield.com has replacement speakers. Also BSless.com. But what can be expected of 5" speakers ? not much bass for sure. 6x9 ? same. I prefer the 8" round 3-way speakers being used in Europe in new cars. (Pioneer). The best resonance comes from using the trunk/boot as the "speaker cabinet", that means installing speakers on the rear shelf, which means cutting round or oval holes, not an easy job. Doors don't make for the best resonance or 'acoustics'. Curiously, my car has the four original 5" speakers, they sound dull at low volume but they come alive at high volumes. I replaced the stereo but not the speakers. For some reason, getting Hi-Fidelity sound in cars is still a problem. Power is not a problem, hi-fi sound is.
