3.8 in a '64 coupe

My issue is with the reaction plate for the torsion bars. The good book says to "Simply" remove the four bolts securing it and tap it off. Ya right.

My car I fitted with the XKs Unlimited adjustable reaction plate. In total it is held in place by 4 bolts. Besides loosing the torsion bar settings, what will happen if I remove all of these bolts? When the torsion bars are released, do they "explosively" release their energy? I am totally unfamiliar with torsion type suspension.

I was hoping there would be enough clearance to lift the bell housing over the plate, but no such luck. Missed it by that much!

Anyway, I would appreciate some advice from those who have gone here before.

Thank you!

Got the engine out yesterday with the help of my son. Father's Day project.

I tried to lift and tilt the engine/gearbox to clear the reaction plate but it wouldn't go. Undid the front suspension and then removed the plate. Separated the gearbox from the engine earlier today and will continue with the tear down.

Thanks to those who replied with ideas for help.

Charlie, you can remove the engine & gearbox without removing the reaction plate. Take the timing pointer off the front of the sump. Yes it is that close.... remove the top shift plate from the gearbox & cover with a rag. Remove front crank dampener & pully. Remove water pump. You will need to jack up the rear of the gear box to get it over the reaction plate. After it clears the engine will lift out at about a 45 degree angle. It helps to have the rear of the car raised a little, to get a better angle.
OR you can disconnect the lower ball joints with a flore jack under them, to relieve the tension on the torsion bars. Don't try to remove the reaction plate bolts with tension on them!!!!
Good luck, Tom
