Ok guys, i am a new first time Jag owner. I traded a truck for a 94 XJ6 and knew it had a couple of issues, but what i didn't know is how hard it was going to be to trace down. The first problem is the interior lights. Pops the fuse as soon as you replace it. I have done some research and exhausted all the ideas that i have come accross. I read that the door switches were a major factor in this problem. I have disconnected all of the switches and the took all the bulbs out and it still has a dead short in it. I do not have a wiring diagram so i am not sure where all the relays are located and/or how many are there to check. Also the radio and passenger seat are also dead, are both of these tied into the same circuit? If so, what else is in this circuit? I did swap the seat control box with the drivers side and the box does work there..

The second problem is the headlight high beam selector, the high beams will not work and when the switch is pulled it does not "click". What i am wondering is should it click, or is it a silent switch?? The kicker is, i can turn on the headlights before i start the car, then crank it and the highbeams come on right away. Can't turn them off afterwards unless i cut the lights off completely.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try buying the Haynes manual for 12 bucks at the local pep boys, it has a rudimentary wiring diagram. Then go sign up for Jag Lovers XJ40 list, its an unsurpassed technical forum , as JCNA is more club based, Jag Lovers is the real technical resource for our cars on the internet.

Good luck.

Hey thanks for the info guys, that does help as this will probably dirict my problem to the relay instead of the switch. I have to admit it's been real fun trying to locate the faults in this car...i just wish i would win one of the battles!

In line with what Doug posted, the only thing the dimmer switch on the steering column does is make contact with two brass contacts when you pull the lever back, therefore you will not hear any "clicking". These contacts complete a circuit which includes the headlight relay. The switching between the high and low beams on these particular Jaguars is accomplished via a contact switch and a relay rather than a mechanical switch as most American cars do.

As Doug also pointed out, you may notice the "clicking" of the headlight relay which on Series III XJ6's, is mounted on the left wheel well very close to the radiator expansion tank.

Ok i guess you guys are sleeping out there or i have really stumped you all. At least tell me about the highbeam switch, every one of you have one and i am sure at least one of you has one that works...Does it click when you select the highbeams? Like most american cars? Anyone?? The same kind of click as the blinker switch when selected?
