I'm seriously thinking of changing the automatic transmission in my 1970 E-type to a manual. Has anyone out there done this, and can I ask what problems did you run into?
Thanks in advance.

Alan,

As Pascal said, no need to swap out the differential or change ratio. It should be fine, especially with the overdrive 5th gear. You can talk to Paul about the gear ratios that are available for the transmission, based on the kind of driving you intend to do, and what will work best with your rear end.

Let us know what you end up doing and how it works out.

alan

the new box is about $4000... check out

http://www.5speeds.com/jag.htm

if you're going for a conversion, this is really the only one to consider... all new box, adapted for the e-type. it's the original 5 speed kit with many of them on the road and track...I have about 50k on mine now, lots of track time too...

it's also bolt in, with no mods needed tot he tunnel unlike other kits, and the shifter is n the right spot.

Paul Cangialosi who makes the kits is a true gearhead enthusiast. ...

the pedal box, console cover, etc... can be found used ... Stefan Roundy, Jaguar Heaven, etc...

my 72 had a slush box when I got it, I had it converted right away... what a difference... the diff on mine is fine with the 5 speed... I turn just under 3000 rpm at 90mph

Thanks for the response, thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Any idea of the price of a 5 speed? I also meant to ask if the rear end would be still be usable as it does seem awfully low geared.

Alan,

Are you planning on doing it yourself or having it done by a shop that knows E-types? There are "kits" available that will fit the car without modifications. Since you have a 2+2, you have a larger transmission tunnel that will accomodate a 4 or 5-spd (I'd opt for the 5-spd, if I were you -- you need the overdrive on the highway). The JT5 available from Paul Cangalosi is excellent. NAYYY.

The hardest part of the project is sourcing the pedal box, pedals and related items. You may also have to replace or have your drive shaft cut down, but that can be done at any competent machine shop that does drive shaft work (check your local phone book, you'll find them there). If you're having trouble finding parts, contact Stefan Roundy (stefanratbealenet.com); he parts out XKE's and might be able to provide the necessary bits and pieces.

Changing from an automatic to a manual is one of the best modifications you can make to an E-type, especially if you go for the 5-spd.
