I have a 1986 XJ-6 Series 111. After running fine I would smell a strong fuel odor followed by the car just cutting off. If I kept working the gas pedal it would stay running with black smoke comming out the exhaust, but as soon as I let off it would stall. This happens when hot or cold. After I crank it a few times it starts and runs like nothing happened until the next time, which could be five minutes or five hours later. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the ox sensor and cat converter are new.

The first thing you should know is that the overfueling is certainly contaminating the engine oil, this can be dangerous to say nothing of the damage it can do to the engine! Clearly something is causing the system to supply too much fuel. Excessively high pressure is usually caused by; blockage in return line/faulty regulator/ECU fault. You need to install a pressure gauge and monitor the pressure while you drive and see what happens. First change the oil and filter!

Jaguar affectionado and etc.

A loose or dirty connection at the coolant temp sensor would trick the system into providing a rich mixture. The CTS itself is known to be a common culprit.
