I know that I need to change my cap and rotor, but there is a different thing going on. Sometimes she idles just right! But other times the idle surges....from alomost dying to over 1,000 rpm. When it is doing this, if you gently apply throttle like pulling away from a light....the rpms drop then it catches itself and goes on. ( a real pain in rush hour traffic!)

Any ideas of things to check or will the new cap and rotor solve the problem?

I came across this once on a '85 XJ6. I fixed it by cleaning the throttle body and resetting the blade clearance to the proper .002" spec. Then I removed the air distribution block to clean all the gunk and lube the adjustment screw....so that adjustments made here actually worked.

Not sure if this will solve your situation as similar symptoms can have different root causes, but its easy and worth a try :-)
