plan on starting Saturday morning, and you'll be done by late Sunday afternoon assuming all goes well, that is not a 4 hour job in the XJ-6. In my car, I took the opportunity and replaced all the bolts, nuts and washers with stainless steel, including the body cover panel bolts. The bolts that are welded to the left or right bumper sections will most likely break due to rust when you try to remove the nut, prepare them days in advance with lots of rust dissolver. The filler mouth requires a new seal every time the tank comes down, be prepared. You'll need to raise the rear side substantially for the tank to clear once it's loosened, the tire jack will not be enough height, and make sure the tank is drained or nearly empty of fuel. NO smoking. Fuel system must be de-pressurized before anything is disconnected. That's an entire procedure by itself, so start early and don't rush it. Better have a second car handy, you'll need it.

You access the fuel gauge sending unit by removing the tail light.
Unplug both wires, touch them together and your fuel gauge should go to full.

You remove the fuel tank first by removing the rear bumper & associated chrome then removing the lower rear quarter panel section that is held to the car with the large phillips head screws and two in the wheel well. Now you can see the tank.
