Last week I started to detail my engine in the XJ6. The liner under the bonnet was deteriorating so I pulled it out. To tell you the truth I can't tell that it is not there. What is the purpose of it, to reduce noise? They are awfully pricey to replace, so I figure if there is no important reason to do so, I'm going to take my time about it. If you don't mind, I figured I would check with you rather than assume. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

John

the two factory hood insulation pieces for the S3 XJ-6 are very difficult to find, that's why they're expensive, but they will last 20 years before they start falling apart from the heat. I saved the original 1984 pieces to try to restore them and reuse them when I find a sprayable coating; Curiously, my 3.8 S type uses an identical material under the hood.
That's what I like about Jaguar, consistency.

I have a very nice bonnet liner from Coventry West (800 331 2193). A heavy and very dense foam, black, perfect fit. Not concours-correct but it looks fantastic. Much cheaper than OEM Jaguar, and much nicer than the tacky "space foil" alternative.

Just a thought.....

I replaced the hood liner in my car with the original insulation material and I paid the price, my car is after all, a keeper, and I stopped trying to outsmart the engineers at Jaguar a long time ago. you can use stuff like aluminum insulation available as an "alternative" from vendors like J.C. Whitney. (looks like aluminum foil from the kitchen with a fiberglass backing). It even says "SPACE AGE INSULARAMA" in giant red letters. It looks very very tacky, but it's cheap.
