Have my engine back from the rebuilder and I'm installing the crank.
Was told that there was a tool to aid in installing rope like seal in the rear bearing. Any hints or methods for this and any other thing to watch out for when assembling the engine?
Thanks

Private Restorer.66\' 3.8 Mark 2,
I forgot to add that to get the distributor offset keyway to be in the right relationship to the crankshaft, you have to do this when you are intalling the helical gear on the crankshaft. If you don't, you cannot correct it later.

I want to add to what George Camp said about needing a Workshop Manual.

I have just finished the assembly of my Series 1 4.2 engine which is my third Jag engine assembly. I infer from your thread that this is your first.

That being the case you are going to have to follow carefully the instructions for such things as lower timing chain tensioner, upper timing chain tensioner, valve timing setting which requires a special gauge and knowledge on how to set the toothed driving discs on the cam sprockets, location of the off center keyway distributor drive when #6 cylinder is on firing stroke TDC (requires #6 cylinder cams to be in the correct position with this keyway also in the correct position) Add to this all the bolting torques you need to know when tightening engine bolts. Yep!!! You need a Workshop Manual.

One word of caution. Set your crankshaft at EXACTLY TDC (don't rely on the ignition markings pointer, it could be wrong) on #6 cylinder(which is the front one. #1 is at the rear) with distributor keyway in correct location and before mounting cylinder head set the cams to correct location with the special gauge( there is one in every complete tool kit) Then after mounting the head DO NOT turn the engine until timing chains are in place or you will have bent valves.

Good luck!

In all respect you need to get a manual (avail. on this site). The rope seal is "BEST" installed with the seal sizer (special tool). Others use other methods but I have never had a problem using the sizer. Any Jaguar dealer that has been in bus. since 1980 or so will have the tool and in most cases it will be new-never used. Although the tool was in the required tool issue it was more efficient for the dealer to change engines. The rear seal is only the first issue you need a manual for. Good luck. George Camp
