i have recently replaced the nylon bushings in the upper column on my 66 e-type. though the shaft fits snugly in the bushings, there is play in the fit of the bushings to the housing (tube) which makes for some wiggle in the shaft. is this "normal" or is there a fix?

Nicholas,

I had exactly the same problem when I ordered a set of new bushings for my Mk 2 steering column. They were appropriately snug on the shaft but way too loose in the tube. As I have a lathe I machined myself a set out of Nylon with the right clearances. I suspect that the fix is to get them from another supplier who hopefully has a different source who makes them correctly.

I would be interested to know from whom you purchased the bushings to see if it was by chance the same supplier I ordered from.
