I am repairing a 1969 E-type FHC. The Breather pipe leading back to the intake air box is rusty...new ones are expensive. I was thinking of using 3/4" flexible copper tubing. Also, the segment of fuel line that connects to the glass bowl filter has rust and I was thinking of making a replacement out of copper. I am guessing that the metal lines are no longer available since the parts websites that I have visited are selling plastic.

Has anyone ever tried this? If so, were the results satisfactory?

Thanks!

I just finished restoring my 1968 E-Type OTS. My car's original breather pipe is unique in that it extends outside of the SU carbs, rather than behind them close to the block. I bought a stainless steel replacement from XKs; they were the only parts dealer who had them. However, the pipe was about 2" too long and bent to the wrong angle at the air filter end. So my shop cut, changed the angle and re-welded that section to form a perfect fit. In my opinion, stainless steel worked out very well for me.

Pretty sure copper has the tendency to "work harden" on things that move and vibrate like cars. Would probably work OK for awhile but you may run the risk of it cracking and breaking over time. Don't just take my word for it but you might look for some info with some real expertise in metal properties before going with copper. You might also try some of the places that sell used E-Type parts for useable originals. My 2 cents
