I am looking at a 1986 XJS 12 cyl. It is silvery/gray paint with red leather. The outside and inside looks great. 38,000 miles. This would be my first Jag so any comments will be appriciated. In the last 5 years it has only had 1500 miles put on it. Does anyone know any thing that will need replaced and how much it costs? How about a tune up? Is there anything to look for on this year?
thanks lance

Hello Lance,
My Jag is about 4 years older then yours, and here are my experience with buying and owning an 80s xjs.
Check for any kind of leaks. Even if it shows no leak when engine is cold. Test drive it until the engine is warm and check for leaks. Not all leaks are bad, but they can be expensive and difficult to stop if you want your car leak free.
Cooling system leak can be bad, make sure the cooling system is ok.
Check the ac and electrical systems.
And my biggest concern of an 80s xjs is rust. It had cost me some $$ to get rid of.
Other than the fixes above, my 1982 HE V12 xjs has been a dream to drive. Love it to death, what a great car!
