I own a 1983 Jaguar XJS. I have a coil problem. I'm thinking about changing from 2 ignition coils to 1 coil. I've seen this advertised. Is this a good idea? Has anyone done this before? What does the secondary coil do? I greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks.

Yes, good idea, especially if one of them is alrady weak. From a Jag supplier ask for a DAC6093 coil. It fits in the position of the original primary coil. The secondary coil should be disconnected although you can leave it in place as a conversation piece if you like :-)

Purpose of 2 coils? At the time of of the HE's design there wasn't a coil available that could support 12 cylinders at high rpm....so 2 coils were used.

The usual symptom if the secondary coil fails is a mis-fire over 4000 rpm.
